Chamber intern spotlight: Jordan Walker

The Calgary Chamber is proud to feature our interns as we support the next generation of talent. We are happy to put this week’s spotlight on an intern who offers her valuable skills and welcoming personality to the team.

Jordan Walker is the Marketing Intern at the Calgary Chamber and is working towards a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in marketing from Mount Royal University. Before beginning this degree, Jordan completed two years of a Journalism program, where she fell in love with photography. She also enjoys reading, boxing, cycling, travelling and hiking.

Q: What’s your favourite part about working at the Chamber?

A: My favourite part about working at the Chamber is the people I work with. Everyone is kind and welcoming, and each person leads with a lot of passion and hard work. I have loved meeting people from local businesses, attending interesting events and creating fun content for the Chamber.

Q: What have you learned, or what are you hoping to learn more about while working at the Chamber?

A: I’ve learned a lot more about politics, especially considering the provincial election that took place this year—I hope to continue learning more about that. I have also learned about marketing from my manager and marketing team who are each incredibly talented.

Q: Do you have any major accomplishments or milestones from your internship that you would like to share?

A: Some fun experiences include interviewing Ken Keelor, CEO of Calgary Co-op, and writing their member feature blog, attending Premier Smith’s keynote luncheon, watching Chamber Fest come to life and making content at all the Chamber’s awesome events.

Q: What are your career goals post-graduation?

A: Once I graduate, I will keep an open mind when it comes to choosing a specific industry. I have found in the past that I have been pleasantly surprised by industries that didn’t initially catch my eye but became absolutely fascinating to me. However, I would love to someday work for the Calgary Police Service. I think social media has become an important part of how police interact and engage with the community and I think it would be extremely rewarding to be a part of that.

Q: Where do you see yourself in ten years? What’s the big career dream?

A: In 10 years, I see myself being a leader and working closely with a supportive team. The Chamber has really shown me the immense value and magic a team can create when they come together. I also picture myself staying engaged with the community and local businesses in some capacity. Calgary is full of so many inspiring companies and people that make me so proud to live here.

Q: What makes you ‘you?’ What are your favourite things to do outside of work?

A: I love being outdoors—on weekends, I get up early and go for walks in different parks in Calgary. My favourite places to walk are Fish Creek Park and Nosehill Park. I enjoy cycling, camping, hiking, working out, gardening, photography and reading. I also love podcasts, music and movies. Whenever possible, I take opportunities to travel and some of my favourite places I have visited so far have been Hawaii, Aruba, Turks & Caicos, California and Texas. I am originally from a small town in Saskatchewan called Oxbow, about 2.5 hours southeast of Regina. My dream is to one day live on an acreage with a massive garden, a couple dogs, a chicken coop and little goats.

I studied journalism for a few years at Mount Royal University before I decided to switch to a business degree with a major in marketing. I love the world of marketing and how you can put a lot of personality and creativity into it. I feel very grateful for my time in journalism as it taught me extremely helpful elements such as graphic design, audio, writing, video and photography.
